The LILCO – LIPA stacks are a large disruption of the siteline on the north shore of Long Island, set among some gorgeous natural beauty in the town of Northport. You can see the stacks for miles and miles from the Long Island sound and also from Connecticut.

On July 4th, 2009 I was at the top of Steer’s Pit taking some photographs and there were hundreds of 4th of July party-goers there taking in the sweet view and sunset. I met a couple form Connecticut that had finally made it to the point they had seen for so long yet knew so little about.

Here is some info about LIPA / LILCO

After going bankrupt, LILCO was salvaged by the State government and in now called LIPA
The LILCO/LIPA stacks in Northport pollute a lot but fortunately, for Long Islanders, the winds blow the toxic fumes out across the Long Island Sound and dump it onto Conn.

LIPA is a government run power company serving Long Island, NY. The LIPA stacks in Northport can be seen from the top of the Empire State Building on a clear day and are the tallest on the East Coast.

  1. LIPA in Port Jefferson today blew a relief valve. Around 9:05 PM today June 1st a loud roar was coming from the harbor. I live up towards west broadway and the sound was incredible, like a jet engine sitting on your roof with after burners on, a tornado etc. Pretty scary but glad it wasn’t anything serious. I think it’s time though after this valve blew their fire a few years ago that we get these plants upgraded and more importantly get them to put out less carbon and clean the air.
